These are some of the questions this project will address in order to collate a comprehensive archaeological survey of Bishop's Caundle. Can you help?
- Is there larger than normal amounts of zinc present in the soil in Caundle Wake, or in Caundle Brook?
- Who lived at Northfield Cottage, east of Wake Court Farm?
- In 1950, council archaeologist C. E. Bean was called to Wake Court where burials were discovered and thought to be of the Civil War era. They were subsequently interred in the cemetery extension. Does anyone present in the village around 1950 remember this? There is documentary evidence that Sir Arthur Keith was involved.
- The parish church is often mistakenly described as dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. It is possible that the dedication was lost hundreds of years ago. Does anyone know the proper name for this church?
- There may be a connection between an arch in the church and those in Sherborne Abbey, installed in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Do any records exist?
- Is there any evidence of an anonymous severed limb being sent to the gallows at Bishop's Caundle to deter rebels? Whose limb was it?
- There are many deserted medieval villages surrounding Bishop's Caundle. Why did the village survive when many around it fell into ruin?
Hi
ReplyDeleteWe have just moved into Bishop's Caundle, into Wisteria Cottage on Milburn Lane - do you have any information on the origin and uses of this building, who may have lived here since its development (?date) - Tim
