The Registers of Caundle Bishop from 1570 to 1814

This is a real gem of a find - the Births, Marriages and Deaths register for Bishop's Caundle comprising almost 300 years of history.

Legally out of copyright, it is available in PDF or text-only from Archive.org. The record states that the physical book itself is held at Harvard University in the States - I wonder how it got there?

This document includes fascinating snippets of everyday life in Bishop's Caundle: the joyful, the mundane, and the tragic. This particular entry in the Deaths register caught my eye:

May 1791. Thos Tuck, aged 19. A waggon went over him Monday.

The Project

When I was little I went out walking around the fields with my dad and the
dog, picking up little bits of clay pipe and pottery without realising the
significance of what I collected. Later I would hear snippets of rumours of a
mill being over there, or the pub having been a place where monks brewed beer in
a time long ago.

Now I'm an undergraduate archaeologist with a wealth of
new resources and a lingering fascination with my village. This blog is where I
will collate my findings, pool all the clippings and the research I am
conducting with the aim of preserving this otherwise elusive information for
future generations, whilst gathering enough material for my
dissertation.

Bishop's Caundle has long been neglected in the wider scope
of things. I hope that, through this blog, my intriguing little village will
have another piece to add to its history.

To Caundle for an hour or two:
As gay a day as ever broke
Above the heads of Caundle voik,
Vor Peace, acome for all, did come
To them wii two new friends at hwome.
Zoo while we kept, wi nimble peace
The wold dun towir avore our feace
The air at last, begun to come
WIi drubbens of a beaten drum;
Ani then we heard the horns loud drouts
Play of a tuenis upper notes;
An I then agean a risen chearm
Vrom tongues of people in a zwarm;
Ani zoo at last, we stood among
The merry feaces oi the drong.
